It’s official. September 1st the $299 PS3 Slim will be shipping. It comes with a 120 GB hard drive and two USB ports. Roughly 1/3 smaller and lighter the new design features the same performance with reduced fan noise. IR hasn’t been added but the latest word is bitstreaming of HD Audio (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA) will be supported. A great addition for Blu-ray enthusiasts.

More than likely you haven’t been using an analog over-the-air TV for years. However the same can’t be said for the rest of your family and friends. Remember June 12th is the day analog goes dark. Using the government provided $40 coupon (up to two per household) you can ensure mom won’t miss her favorite show. With converter boxes going for as low as $40 you can be a hero for free. If you get lucky like me you’ll get a piece or two of pie as a reward.
Has Clint Eastwood ever acted in, directed or produced a bad movie? Not that we know of and come June 9th you can catch yet another at home. Gran Torino is thoroughly entertaining on several levels with a strong story powerfully told and characters you care about well after the movie ends. From all reports the video and audio are stellar so there is simply no reason not to pick up a copy.
Since Clint is getting up in age (78 at last count) while writing this I thought of another favorite. The Straight Story
Now to prove the leading man doesn’t have to be up in years for the movie to be a keeper we highly recommend Saint Ralph. This isn’t a true story but it’s seriously touching and funny at the same time. Ralph is 14 and not a saint as one of the funnier scenes in recent memory shows all too well. Again only available on DVD and combined with The Straight Story you have one of the best double features I can think of.

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD & DVD-Audio
OPPO Digital, Inc. is about to release their first Blu-ray player the BDP-83. Known for making the best up-converting DVD players their Blu-ray player will be just as popular. It carries on their tradition with stellar DVD playback and supports both SACD and DVD-Audio. Making it a universal player priced at least a thousand dollars less than its competition.
The player uses Anchor Bay’s (DVDO) award winning Video Reference Series technology for image processing which insures you’ll get the best possible image whether it be DVD or Blu-ray. The player also comes with 7.1 analog output and will stream supported media files such as MKV.
List price and availability (around May 18th our guess) hasn’t been announced yet. Those luckily enough to have been selected for the Early Adoption Program paid $499. Hopefully it will be priced the same for the rest of us but don’t be surprised if it ends up being $599. If DVD performance is important to you or you’re looking for a universal player it will be a bargain at either price.
The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Theatrical Editions) [Blu-ray]
The movies included in this soon to be released trilogy aren’t the extended editions which to my thinking is a big plus. The 358 minutes released here are more than enough to sit through. However Lord of the Rings fanatics have taken umbrage and are refusing to purchase the trilogy until the extended editions are included. Which of course will happen the moment the casual fans have stopped purchasing their copy of this trilogy.
