OPPO BDP-80 in Stock at Amazon

OPPO Digital, Inc. has released the BDP-80. The BDP-83′s little brother. Differences between the models include:

• Very good but not world-class upscaling of DVDs
• Downgraded 7.1 analog output
• Glow in the dark versus backlit remote
• Slightly smaller and lighter chassis
• Plastic (brushed) versus aluminum faceplate

OPPO has also recently introduced the BDP-83SE which has beefed up 7.1 analog output for $899. So now there are three models to choose from. You can easily base your decision on the following:

• If you want the best analog output possible purchase the BDP-83SE
• If you want the  best DVD upscaling purchase the BDP-83 (or BDP-83SE if you want the upgraded analog output)
• If you want a very good player that out performs most other models on the market purchase the BDP-80

Blu-ray video and audio (via HDMI) will be virtually identical between all three models. In summary if you aren’t into Netflix and other Internet based streaming the BDP-80 at $289 is an out right bargain. With OPPO’s higher than industry’s quality players and commitment to ongoing support you can’t go wrong.

Sony has released a high-end player in their low-end chassis. Sure they upgraded it a bit but gone are the old school styling and weight of the previous ES models. At the same time they threw in WiFi N which before long will be standard on all players.

What makes the BDP-1000ES better than their entry level players are three features found on the high-end players.

• Super Bit Mapping and HD Reality Enhancer
• Precision Cinema HD Upscale
• 7.1 channel analog output (dropped from the newer low-end models)

The first will tiddy up your HD video to some extend without any real ill effects often found when using similar tools from other vendors. The next allows your DVDs to appear more HD like and finally if your receiver doesn’t support HDMI audio you’ll still be able to enjoy HD audio codecs.

At roughly a $500 premium over their BDP-S360 it’s a lot of money to spent for the above features. Most will pass but for the true enthusiast it’s a great chance to get ES features at a great price.

It’s official. September 1st the $299 PS3 Slim will be shipping. It comes with a 120 GB hard drive and two USB ports. Roughly 1/3 smaller and lighter the new design features the same performance with reduced fan noise. IR hasn’t been added but the latest word is bitstreaming of HD Audio (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA) will be supported. A great addition for Blu-ray enthusiasts.

The Sony BDP-S560 has begun showing up at all of the expected places. The new model features Wi-Fi and serves as a DLNA client. Missing are the 7.1 analog output and BD-Live memory included with the BDP-S550 model. All and all nothing worth upgrading for unless you have to have wireless access and even then the LG390 will probably be more attractive.
