Sony BDP-S1000ES Blu-ray Disc Player
Sony has released a high-end player in their low-end chassis. Sure they upgraded it a bit but gone are the old school styling and weight of the previous ES models. At the same time they threw in WiFi N which before long will be standard on all players.
What makes the BDP-1000ES better than their entry level players are three features found on the high-end players.
The first will tiddy up your HD video to some extend without any real ill effects often found when using similar tools from other vendors. The next allows your DVDs to appear more HD like and finally if your receiver doesn’t support HDMI audio you’ll still be able to enjoy HD audio codecs.
At roughly a $500 premium over their BDP-S360 it’s a lot of money to spent for the above features. Most will pass but for the true enthusiast it’s a great chance to get ES features at a great price.
It’s official. September 1st the $299 PS3 Slim will be shipping. It comes with a 120 GB hard drive and two USB ports. Roughly 1/3 smaller and lighter the new design features the same performance with reduced fan noise. IR hasn’t been added but the latest word is bitstreaming of HD Audio (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA) will be supported. A great addition for Blu-ray enthusiasts.

Sony BDP-S560 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
The Sony BDP-S560 has begun showing up at all of the expected places. The new model features Wi-Fi and serves as a DLNA client. Missing are the 7.1 analog output and BD-Live memory included with the BDP-S550 model. All and all nothing worth upgrading for unless you have to have wireless access and even then the LG390 will probably be more attractive.

Born on the Fourth of July (Special Edition)
We wish everyone a happy 4th of July and give our thanks to the many readers who have supported us by ordering their new OPPO BDP-83 via Amazon. We knew OPPO had a winner on their hands but we had no idea how many readers would be kind enough to place their order via our site.
We appreciate the support and as one enthusiasts to another we promise you’ll find the new OPPO BDP-83 even more valuable than our site! If not, heck you have thirty days to return it.
Bonus little known fact: It has the best Blu-ray remote we have used not to mention it’s backlit.

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD & DVD-Audio
OPPO Digital, Inc. has finally released their BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD and DVD-Audio. Place your OPPO BDP-83 order here! We have been using this player for a month or so and on every level it’s well worth the entry fee. We posted our take in this post.
The short take is the price is the same $499 charged during the Early Adoption Programs. It’s built extremely well for its price point and offers everything one could wish for and then some being a true universal player.
If you don’t require world-class DVD upscaling OPPO’s new BDP-80 might just be a better choice and being over $200 less can’t hurt!

LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player
Can you answer yes to the following…
If you answered yes to all four questions the best Blu-ray player doesn’t exist since everyone of them will perform almost identically. Sure you’ll read review after review going on about this or that and you’ll run across endless postings why one player is better than another. After doing A/B comparisons with roughly two dozen players I found the differences equivalent to the following.
More than likely you have strong feelings about each of the above but there is no denying they are more similar than different. I’ll take Jiff, Cola-Cola and Nike but my choices are based on the little things. Which is exactly what you’ll need to do when deciding which Blu-ray player is best for you. A few of these include…
That’s a big list of small things to consider but at least you can easily decide which of them are important to you which will reduce all of those best in the world players down to the one which is best for you. Here are our current recommendations based on a few of those little things.
If you are a bargain hunter Amazon is one of the places you need to visit. Their Home Audio and Theater Outlet department generally features last year’s models at great close-out prices. Most often we will recommend going with the latest and greatest but at times that simply means it’s a different color, offers little or no improvement over last year’s model and on the rare occasion the older model actually performs better.
When hunting be sure to keep an eye out for speakers, amplifiers and AV receivers as they seldom see dramatic changes from one model year to the next. Especially with speakers! With AV receivers be sure it offers enough HDMI inputs and the latest HD decoding and you should be good to go.
We can only cover a limited number of topics and items so we like to highlight items readers have discovered by themselves and recently purchased. Many are great finds and just might be what you are looking for the moment you see it.

Panasonic DMP-BD60 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player, Black
We have to admit the Roku Digital Video Player isn’t our favorite streaming device. That award goes to VUDU with its far superior audio and video. But Roku offers two features you’ll miss with VUDU.
If you are wondering why it’s our are favorite that’s because it has no built-in storage which restricts you to live streaming which reduces the video quality (especially with HD content) and it currently only supports stereo audio. Both of these limit its usefulness to casual viewing which isn’t a bad thing in and of itself just don’t plan on replacing your Blu-ray player with one.
Speaking of Blu-ray players quite a number of them now offer Internet based streaming including support for both Netflix and Amazon. Since the entry level players cost roughly $250 we would recommend going this route unless you are already covered with Blu-ray players or simply want to throw a box into one of the kids rooms.
Currently Netflix is the only game in town if you want to pay a subscription fee and be able to enjoy unlimited content of movies and TV series. Just keep in mind most of the latest releases aren’t included. But if you are a movie lover and already subscribe to Netflix you’ll have more movies available for viewing than you have time.
